This slideshow guides students through an analysis of Walt Whitman's poem, "A Noiseless Patient Spider." It is designed to introduce advanced analysis by demonstrating how basic poem analysis looks, compared to advanced thematic analysis. AP Poem analysis mandates that students connect poetic elements to theme, which is often a hard feat to accomplish. By comparing and contrasting basic versus thematic poetry notes, students see the next steps required on their part. A sample essay outline is also included, so students can see how to hypothetically organize their thoughts in preparation for a poetry essay. Slide notes are included in the powerpoint version and are collected in a document to act as a teacher's guide. This also comes with a student handout version of the poem. This lesson is designed to take 15-30 minutes. Each file is available in both PDF and Microsoft Office form and is fully editable.
