This is a ready-to-use, 49 page packet for teachers to use with students in grades 4-7 who are reading PIE, by Sarah Weeks. It includes a 21 page student workbook, student vocabulary bookmarks, an answer key, and a listing of Common Core Standards supported in the student workbook. In addition, a 3 page, end-of-book test is included along with an answer key (the book test is also sold separately in my store
if you prefer not to purchase the novel study).
The student workbook divides the text into four reading assignments of about 45 pages each. Within each assignment are 4 pages of activities to go along with the reading assignment. They include vocabulary reinforcement, character identification, recognizing similes, idioms, and onomatopoeia, summarizing, comprehension, identifying character traits, point-of-view, and noticing clues. There are also many opportunities provided for students to provide evidence, to provide written explanations, and to give opinions. The workbook is designed for guided independent work; that way students can have directed work while the teacher is working on small group or individual instruction. Also, the teacher can have a parent or an aide use the workbook as a guide to be able to direct student performance or to conduct small group discussions of the book. Questions and tasks in the workbook are intended to prompt high level thinking and quality group discussions.

PIE in a Nutshell (or, perhaps I should say “in a PIEshell”):
This 2011 book written by Sarah Weeks, is a warm and tender story of eleven year old Alice whose dear pie-baking Aunt Polly has just died and life just doesn’t seem right without her. It is also a mystery to find a “catnapper”, a burglar, and the missing pie crust recipe.
