This 60 page, ready-to-use packet is designed to use with students in grades 4-7 as they read the 2014 Newbery Honor Book Doll Bones by Holly Black. It includes a 29 page student workbook and an answer key. I designed the student booklets to fill three main functions. First, they guide students as they read, helping them focus on important issues in the text as well as reinforcing essential reading and writing skills for students. Next, my intent was to provide clear guidance to classroom helpers/aides as they conduct discussion groups with students reading the text; the teacher can simply provide them with a student booklet/answer key and they will know what the students are expected to have read and what concepts and information to focus on. Finally, the student booklets help assess student comprehension and determine weaknesses/strengths for each student.
The student booklet/workbook divides the text into seven reading assignments with questions and tasks to go with each one. Skills practiced include clarifying, defining vocabulary, demonstrating comprehension, identifying character traits, comparing/contrasting, figurative language (personification, simile, hyperbole, idiom, metaphor), citing evidence from the text, and identifying setting/plot.
The booklet is intended to be independent work so that students can be working on this in class while the teacher is meeting with another group. It is expected that students will be responsible for completing one reading assignment with the accompanying tasks each week and that they will meet once a week with the teacher (or aide/parent) along with the other students reading the same text to discuss and review the assignments.

DOLL BONES in a nutshell:
If you have boys and girls who love a good adventure, be sure to let them know about this one! Good friends Poppy, Alice, and Zach are middle school students who have played make-believe games for years. But now Zach's father tries to put an end to it. They have a quest they must complete first: one that is surely more important than any of the others...this one is real life (or "afterlife"). They need to lay the Queen's ghost to rest! This quest will test their friendship and their resolve and will even give them (and perhaps you) frightening dreams.
Appropriate for students in grades 4-7. Reading level is approximately 5th grade.
