This is a ready-to-use, 82 page packet for teachers to use with students in grades 5-8 who are reading The ODDS of Getting EVEN, by Sheila Turnage. It includes a listing of ELA Common Core Standards supported in the student booklet, a vocabulary bookmark for students to use while reading, vocabulary lists for each assignment, a 29 page student booklet designed to reinforce essential common core reading and writing skills, 5 culminating activities, plus an answer key for the student booklet.
The student booklet divides the text into seven reading assignments of about 45 pages each and provides 4 pages of questions and activities to go with each reading assignment. Skills addressed include extending vocabulary, demonstrating comprehension, recognizing figurative language (personification, simile, metaphor, idiom, hyperbole, analogy, alliteration), determining theme, inferring, explaining, recognizing point-of-view, character traits, character changes, identifying mystery clues, recognizing parts of speech, writing constructed responses, citing the text, and persuasive writing.
The novel studies I create are intended to make the student's reading experience richer and the teacher's life easier. They can be copied (duplexed or single sided) and stapled along the side to make a workbook and then put to use that very same day! I design them to support the text and to support Common Core Standards. They can be given to a parent or aide to direct a book club or literature circle or discussion group. They can be used as class work or as homework. They can be used to assess student understanding. I hope you will find them as helpful and all-encompassing as I have!

The Odds of Getting Even...in a Nutshell
Published in 2015, this is Book Three of the sequel begun by the 2013 Newbery Honor book, Three Times Lucky.
The AAUW Award for Juvenile Literature was presented to Sheila Turnage for The Odds of Getting Even.
Eleven year old Moses LoBeau is a bright, yet spunky, 6th grader who is the co-founder of the Desperado Detective Agency. She and best friends, Dale and Harm are trying to find clues that will lead to solving the crimes that have begun happening since Macon escaped from jail. Many clues lead to twists and turns that will keep students hooked from beginning to end! And not only is it a great mystery, it teaches important lessons about family and friends.
Delightfully rich and descriptive writing! This book is full of colorful expressions, vivid adjectives, and energetic verbs. It is truly a treat to read and a book not to miss.
Appropriate for students in grades 5-8. Reading level approximately 6th grade.
