The 30 page student booklet divides the text into seven weekly reading assignments of about 40 pages each (some more, some less). Each assignment provides questions and activities to enhance understanding and to enrich the reading experience. The student activities are designed to be both fun and instructive. Reading and writing skills/crafts that are practiced in this packet include recognizing figurative language (idioms, puns, similes, metaphors, personification, & onomatopoeia), visualizing/sketching, genre, vocabulary extension, explaining/describing/clarifying, inferring, demonstrating comprehension, summary writing, recognizing character traits, and understanding the author’s purpose and theme. Occasional mini-lessons and class discussions on some of the writing crafts and techniques introduced may be necessary depending on the skills of the students. However, most of the student booklet should be able to be completed independently by students and could be used for homework or classwork.

Word of Mouse, published in 2017 by James Patterson & Chris Grabenstein, makes a fun, yet challenging, read for book clubs and is enthusiastically enjoyed by boys and girls alike.
