As students read the book, they will create the apps they would find on the main character's phone. There are 4 apps in total: a song, a contact (with text conversation), a game, and a photo app. There is a smart phone to collect the app's icons. For each of the 4 apps, I have included an assignment sheet (with spaces for the students to fill in their answers), an example using "Older Run," and a grading sheet. There is also a short summer of Gary Paulson's work "Older Run" so that even if the students aren't familiar with the story, the examples will make sense. The students will have a blast studying the novel in detail, and they will practice conflict, characterization, making connections, critical thinking, and quoting from a book. Each app goes with a different set of chapters. The projects will each take a couple of class days to work through, for a total of approximately 8 nonconsecutive days.
