This assignment has the students cut a picture out of a magazine that they think they can write 10 lines about. They write a poem about the picture, and the poem has to include certain poetic elements. This assignment takes about an hour.
After marking the rough draft, they glue the picture to a sheet of construction paper and write the poem neatly under it. After grading, I display them around the classroom.
Most student really like this activity and it's always a good laugh seeing what they come up with. Some of them poems turn out to be fairly outlandish, but as long as they're learning... :).
