This original poem about maps can be used in the classroom to tie social studies concepts into literacy. Teachers can add this poem to a student's poetry journal or use it as an independent activity. Students are asked to illustrate the poem after reading it on the illustration page included with the poem. Class choral readings, shared readings with a buddy, and independent readings of poems are wonderful ways to build fluency and various other literacy skills.
I encourage all K-3 teachers to have a poetry journal for each student full of thematic poetry that is added throughout the school year. Check back often as other thematic poems will be added over time!
