Description
Develop and apply a mathematical relationship for balance on a simple seesaw using PhET's Balancing Act. The condition of balance it built methodically then applied to new situations. Group-specific unknowns can be assigned, which is a nice touch when students are a bit eager to share during the activity.
This is a productive precursor to an in-class, hands-on balanced torques lab (commonly done with meterstick see-saws, fulcrums, mass hangers, etc.). Students see the connection from the simulation to the real-world version.
