A RAISIN IN THE SUN Culminating Activities to Enhance Understanding and Appreciation of the Play

Students appreciate the richness of Hansberry’s characterization and symbolism in A Raisin in the Sun.

These activities prompt kids to analyze the play and to creatively express their understanding and appreciation.

The first activity provides students with Langston Hughes’s poem, “Let America be America Again.”

There are 15 questions/tasks about the meaning of the poem.

Students are then directed to formulate a definition of the American Dream as the Youngers would express it.

Following is a chart with lines from the poem. Students choose Beneatha or Walter and respond as that character, rewording the lines.

The second activity is poetry writing.

Students are provided with a chart listing characters and associated symbols.

They must indicate on the chart how the symbol enhances the character.

Following is a chart where students choose a character and follow a formula to compose a poem.

An example poem is provided following further instructions to add graphics which illustrate the meaning of the poem.

Third, is a list of eight writing activities from which students or teacher can choose.

Attractive format, clear font.

Enjoy!
