This is a movie guide that I use when students watch the 2008 movie version of A Raisin in the Sun starring Sean Combs, Sanaa Lathan, Audra McDonald, and Phylicia Rashad.
The movie is 131 minutes and is available on YouTube.
The activity's introduction includes Langston Hughes' poem "Harlem" with five questions analyzing the poem and a brief discussion taken from the Smoop website.
Following is biographical information about Lorraine Hansberry, the societal issues of the time period, and acclaim for the play.
I created a series of charts for students to fill in about the introduction and about the movie.
I've found that filling in charts is easier for students than answering an array of questions and does not distract them from the film yet keeps them alert to what is happening on the screen.
There are ten pages, about 35 tasks.
Some tasks require higher-level thinking and lend to compelling discussion after the film or after each period of viewing.
I include relevant graphics, use clear font, and provide space for student responses.
