Are your students tired of regular quizzes, but you need a way to assess their reading? If so, then you should engage them with a game of “A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry: Trashketball Review Game."
Throughout this power point presentation, teams of students recall characters and plot events in order to compete to shoot baskets into a trash can. For the first round, students simply identify the characters, but in rounds two - four, students answer questions about the play. In the final bonus round, students answer questions requiring higher level thinking, including identifying literary elements. There are 25 questions in total.
Research shows that students often learn best when they can move, and this game motivates them with their love of sports. When you put your students in heterogeneous groups for a game with friendly competition, it is an excellent way to meet the needs of all of your students and reward them for their success.
Depending on the ability of your students, the game will take 60 minutes to play. The power point presentation includes a slide which explains the rules at the beginning of the game, and a key is provided on the last slide.
