Are you teaching an objective that reads something like: Explain how humans impact their environment. This activity will introduce the complex topic of the ozone layer in STEM, Environmental Science, Health or Biology.
Each student receives a handout. While I take attendance, each student reads the short article from the EPA site, "AirNow". Students highlight and follow directions. Those who forgot their highlighter, underline the required information. Ten minutes is generally all students need to complete the activity and crossword puzzle. Together, the class and teacher go over the answers.
If you are using my bellwork form, each student enters "The Ozone, a Hole that Isn't a Hole Reading Activity" in the daily box, and staples his/her work to the bellwork sheet for collection on Friday.
Last note, this reading activity dovetails nicely with the reading efforts of my school. Administrators appreciate that a Science teacher is assisting in the effort. You can use it as a pair/share activity. If you want to extend this introduction with a power point on the ozone layer to make it a complete lesson, there is one in my offering. Each product is at a reduced price, and remember they can be used over and over again.
A Ticket Out the Door is included in the Reading Activity and Power Point.
Please note: Hamza has free clip art, and Discovery Channel has free tools to create a crossword puzzle. Find them on the web.
