Created by Jean Martin, this packet provides the teacher with a ready-to-use, CCSS aligned, 22 page student workbook/guide to use with 4th-7th grade students who are reading We Hold These Truths, the last book in the Benjamin Pratt & the Keepers of the School series written by Andrew Clements. The student booklet (and, yes, an answer key is also included!) is designed to provide the student with a weekly guide that consists of a reading assignment (approximately 50 pages) for the week along with questions and meaningful activities to be independently completed during the week, either at home or in the classroom. Ideally, the assignment will be discussed and reviewed in a weekly literature circle setting (classes might call this a book club meeting, novel study group, or a reading group) with the teacher, a classroom aide, a parent, or a student leader. The student booklet can be used with small groups of students who have chosen to read this particular book or with an entire class where all students are reading the same book.
Skills addressed in the student booklet support Common Core State Standards for both reading and writing and include vocabulary, comprehension, interpreting expressions, inferring, compare & contrast characters, point of view, and writing crafts (simile, metaphor, idiom). Students are given opportunities to write both long and short responses, do independent research, and complete a crossword puzzle. There are 5 culminating activities which can be used as part of the student workbook, to replace other pages that are not as appropriate for your particular class, or to differentiate instruction.
NOTE:I also have created reading workbooks for the other four books in this series: Fear Itself
, The Whites of Their Eyes
, In Harm's Way
, and We The Children

Benjamin Pratt & The Keepers of the School:
We Hold These Truths …in a Nutshell:
Andrew Clements ends his Keepers of the School series with a story that is as full of suspense as the other four books in the series were. With just days until the scheduled demolition, the pressure is on to find a way to save their historic school. But, of course, just as hard as Ben and the Keepers are working to save the school you can be sure that janitors Lyman and Wally are also working to be sure an amusement park will be taking its place. It's the Glennley Beast against the USS Oakes! This is the final book in the series, so somehow the war will come to an end...but how??
Note: Titles for all books in this series come from famous quotes. The title for this book, We Hold These Truths, is the beginning of the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence.
Appropriate for students in grades 4-7.
