This worksheet and one slide PowerPoint can be used to teach the elements of music. The worksheet uses what students know, objects, and has them write adjectives about them. It also involves writing about music. This worksheet should be used in conjunction with the PowerPoint. The PowerPoint pictures a cauldron and the elements of music fly in one at a time. I use the folk song “Zum Gali” to demonstrate each element one at a time. We begin with just the melody (no rhythm), then add rhythm, harmony (with the ostinato and melody together), we add timbre with a finger cymbal accenting the rest at the beginning of each phrase in the melody as well as a steady beat on Orff metallophones, the we addtexture by playing the word rhythm of the ostinato on xylophones, add dynamic interest, then put it into an organized form ( used ABABA, A = ostinato only, B is ostinato and melody).
Activity has been connected to the common core in language and music as well as the National Standards in Music Education.
