This product goes along with the well-known, public activity called "A Recipe for Traits," which has students systematically create a unique dog based on the combination of "ingredients" that will ultimately lead into a Unit on DNA.

There are two files in this product: a PowerPoint presentation and an accompanying worksheet. The PowerPoint begins with an intro activity (bellwork, do-now, etc) that can be done independently or in cooperative pairs. There are teacher notes accompanying each slide in the PowerPoint with tips and tricks learned over the past several years. There is a culminating exit activity for students to complete after they create their DNA dogs on the last slide.
The worksheet can be printed two per sheet and cut in half to save on paper. My students always love this activity and it is a great introduction to DNA. The day after this activity is when I introduce the word DNA and constantly refer back to our “dogs” as a basis for understanding, as our dogs were created using the same basic ingredients that make up all living things. I have used this activity in both middle school classrooms and high school biology classes.
