Common Core requires students to work on their close reading skills to advance their vocabulary knowledge. This activity will do just that.
Ten sentences from “A Rose for Emily” are included here, each with a complex word highlighted. For each highlighted word, students will do three things:
1. Write down their “best guess” of the definition, based on the other words in the sentence
2. Write down the dictionary definition, as they find it
3. Write a new sentence that uses the word correctly.
