In this project students are given the challenge of working through the steps of the engineering design process to design a new athletic shoe. This project incorporates STEM in the following way:
Science: compression, force
Technology: following steps of engineering design process, research
Engineering: shoe/industrial design, creating & testing solution, Ergonomics, materials science
Students are presented with a background situation, challenge, design constraints/specifications, and the materials they may use to solve the challenge. They then conduct background research/investigation. They brainstorm ideas and complete two thumbnail sketches and evaluate their designs before completing their final design. Finally, they test and evaluate, improve, and communicate their solution.
The project includes a grading rubric and a teacher tips page with helpful suggestions of how to lengthen, shorten, and vary the project. The project may also be used with or without the shoe template.
