In this project students are given the challenge of working through the steps of the engineering design process to design, test, and evaluate a pallet. This project incorporates STEM in the following way:
Science: forces - compression, tension, shearing
Technology: following steps of engineering design process, research
Engineering: structural engineering, creating and testing solution
Math: measurement, weight
Students are presented with a background situation, challenge, design constraints/specifications, and the materials they may use to solve the challenge. They then conduct background research/investigation. They brainstorm ideas and complete two thumbnail sketches and evaluate their designs before completing their final design. Finally, they construct, test and evaluate their solution, identify possible improvements, and communicate their solution.
The project includes a grading rubric and a teacher tips page with helpful suggestions of how vary the project.
