This is my first unit plan that incorporates creativity and logic in a very integral way. I feel that some subjects are robbed of creativity, such as English or Math, and that this is very negative because creativity is always an important aspect of learning. This might not be as pronounced in the language arts as it is in mathematics, but it is often perceived this way by students. Two of the main activities in the unit consist of firstly creating a mini-haibun, which is a variation of haiku that combines narrative paragraphs, the second activity is creating an op-ed. The first is obviously a creative exercise, but the second, which involves research, is also creative, if also a logical process. I'm very pleased with the end product and I think you will find this to be a refreshing unit plan that you can tweak to fit the needs of your classroom.
