In Class Activity to work on quote analysis from John Knowles's A Separate Peace, Chapter 8.
Arrange students into groups of six. Pass out one piece of paper to each student in the group; each sheet has a unique quote from Chapter 8. Students will silently read the quotation and respond to the quote by writing at least 3 sentences analyzing the statement on a deeper level, considering what is really implied in each quote. Students then sign their name next to their contribution.
Students will have three minutes to respond to the quote in front of them. When the teacher calls time, students pass their paper to the person on their right and begin a new conversation. Encourage students to respond to their peer’s thoughts as well. Once all papers have made their way to each person in the group, ask the student who responded to the quote first to read their peers' comments and notice how the "conversation" evolved.
