In order to determine the level of writers you have in your class, you need to assess their writing.
This is a great activity to do during the first week of school. It is a task where students are exposed to the stages of writing process. They write a short story about their summer and get practise with the writing process (ex. brainstorming ideas, rough draft, editing, final copy). Students are not taught this process for this task but are given opportunities to practise the skill.
