A modified version of a Montessori "oldie, but goodie" that allows students to begin to understand the major planets (and I couldn't leave out Pluto) of our solar system. I suggest this activity as a introduction to the solar system. Using Post-It notes and rulers, children follow step by step instructions to lay out a simple "to-scale" model in any hallway or outdoors. The finished product is perfect for remembering the number of planets, the order of the planets, and for drawing initial conclusions about the solar system. Use the included questions for discussion and create your own to add to it. The finished product could also be used as a hallway display when substituting pictures for post-its.
