By adding this simple heading to your tests, you can help your students experience the relationship between studying and test scores. Students must make a percentage grade prediction before each test. Then they must rate their preparation level for the test.
0- they did nothing, didn't even pay attention in class
1- they listened in class
2- reviewed notes
3- completed their study guide
4- had someone call out their notes to them
The levesl are cumulative, meaning they not only did level 3, but all the levels before level 3 as well.
When grading tests, I was able to congratulate them on reaching their predicted grade, or suggest a higher study level in order to obtain their predicted grade next time.
At first this process makes the students uncomfortable as they are held accountable for their test preparation, but by the end of the year their predictions became a personal challenge for them and I saw an increase in studying.
