The purpose of this activity packet is to provide students with vocabulary practice and background knowledge before reading A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury. This packet contains a series of pre-reading strategies and activities designed for ELL students to use in the mainstream English or ESL classroom. Simplified definitions are included, as well as a Magic Square review worksheet and a short test. Spelling and parts of speech are also emphasized. Cloze questions contain background information about the story to help prepare students for reading. An answer key is also included.
This particular story has many vocabulary words that are difficult for ELL students, however, there is a COMIC BOOK/GRAPHIC NOVEL version of it that I use with my students. The vocabulary included in this packet can be found in the traditional and graphic novel versions.
Information about the comic can be found here:
A Sound of Thunder Comic
I decided to create these packets when I saw how much my ELL students struggled while trying to read grade-level texts in their core classes. I hope these activities help your students as much as they have mine!
