Great Christmas Classroom Activity/Parent Gift
Each year I read the book, A Special Place for Santa to my class. I love this book!!! It is perfect for any Christian family who struggles to keep their focus on Christ amid the crushing influence of the secular world. How does one reconcile Jesus and Santa Claus in their thinking? This narrative blends imagination and historical facts in a delightful way that brings Santa Claus - St. Nicholas - to his knees before the living Christ.
After reading the book we talk about the good deeds their parents do throughout the year, like driving them to baseball practices, tucking them in at night, or making dinner for a sick friend, etc.. I try to have my students be very specific - not just they drive me where I want to go, or buy me presents. Do their parents volunteer in an organization? Help at the food pantry? Brush their hair each night? The list can go on and on once they get started.
I have the students brain storm ideas on a piece of notebook paper, edit their list, and finally write their favorite 10 items on the strips of paper provided. They cut the strips out and place them into a decorated box (or envelope) and they give this to their parents as a Christmas gift.
