The A+ Survival Literature Circle Journal begins with a book tasting. The students will be escorted into class by a waitress or waiter (teacher). I will seat them at a survival table (Hatchet, The City of Ember, Tuck Everlasting, and Number the Stars). The students will be given 12 minutes to read and sample the novels and then they'll be given 3 minutes to write a reaction to the novel. Then rotate to the next table.
After all the novels have been read, the students will rate their choice to read with a rating of 4, 3, 2, 1. Four being the favorite and 1 being the least favorite. Then I will assigned the novels based on their choices. See Novel Rating Sheet for purchase.
The students will be given one month to complete the novels. The Literature Circle Journal is set up, so that students reading, lets say Hatchet will read chapters 1-5 and then decide on a summary and write the summary. So, each group will read, meet, and decide on a group summary.
The students will also be jigsawed out in another group, so they can share with other students what is happening in their novel. Then those students can write a brief description based on the students information.
