GET THEM THINKING!

The Sweet Smell of Roses is a gentle, inspirational story that captures the heart of the Civil Rights movement through the eyes of two young sisters. The girls sneak out of their house down to Charlotte Street to join the march. There is a “sweet smell of roses in the air” as the sisters wait to hear Dr. King speak. The sisters start to march, holding hands with strangers who are all marching for freedom. The Sweet Smell of Roses is written as a tribute to the many young children who participated in civil rights movement.

Students will have opportunities to discuss bravery in many forms, review impactful speeches, study symbolism, consider consequences of behavior, and write/share about perspectives.

It is designed to allow you to facilitate or participate. Have fun!
