The purpose of this lab is to help students explore how various locations around the world experience seasons.
The Gist of the Lesson.
On the evening before the lab is to be conducted, students will be given homework to plot 12 predetermined locations on a map using the locations coordinates.. Students will also be instructed to cut apart 12 graphs (depicting average monthly temperature data) and bring these to class (All materials are included in the homework packet).
The day of lab, class will start with a bellringer in which students will be given a map with the locations already plotted. They are to guess the names of the locations, and look back at their homework if they need assistance.
Students will conduct a discovery lab, using the graphs provided, to come to come to the following conclusions.
*Not ALL locations experience four seasons
*Some locations experience “warm” temperatures all year long (or have a warmer climate)
*Some locations experience “cool” temperatures all year long (or have a cool climate)
*Some locations (those located in the Northern Hemisphere) experience “summer” during the months of June and July.
*Some locations (those located in the Southern Hemisphere) experience “summer” during the months of December and January.
At the conclusion of the lab, students and teacher will write their conclusions in the provided graphic organizer.
