In this Hands-on Lab assignment, the students are put in the situation of being textbook writers who must include a "Timeline of Life" in their science textbook. They are given specific direction using adding machine paper rolls and colored pencils. You will also need something to measure with (like a yard stick) and a couple strips of tape to hold it in place. This assignment is a lot of fun for the students and the teacher. I use it for my high school biology courses, but it could easily be worked into middle school classes, as well. I buy my adding machine paper rolls from Office Depot for a around a buck for 150 feet (about 16 of these strips).
