This is a social studies, reading and writing unit I created for a 4-week summer school program. It was aimed at students entering 3rd grade, but could be used anywhere between grades 2-4 depending on your students' abilities. It is saved as a Word document so that you can make edits as necessary. For instance, our journal started with Crater Lake because we are in Oregon, and then we looped around the country from there (12 locations in all). You may want to change the order. The cover page is simple so that students can personalize it with drawings or stickers.
For the journal, I used the cover page and journal pages and 5 scrapbook pages (construction paper) which could be used to paste photos, brochures, etc. Each location in the journal has space for a drawing and a few sentences about the place visited.
Each article is one page and is broken into subheadings and also contains 2-3 vocabulary words. Each article comes with a comprehension page containing fill-in-the-blanks, true or false statements, and define the vocabulary words spaces. I started this unit popcorn reading as a whole group and answering the questions all together while students highlighted the evidence they found. Once they got the hang of it, I had them work in small groups.
Prior to reading, we watched a couple short videos on YouTube about the places we visited, or visited the location's website and explored that way. Here is the link to the videos I used: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvMGmrp6gyXS1Ksm2wPjw_tvDz_fgiL-U
