A Trip Through The Winter Holidays yoga brain break is a two page sequence that guides students through basic, and a couple lesser known or more difficult, yoga poses that transitions children from sitting and reclining to standing and balance poses and then back to kneeling and reclining poses with a fun winter holiday theme. It's a fun way to get oxygen flowing to the brain and in turn increases students' focus and concentration following this activity. This sequence has multiple opportunities to focus on the breath, ending with taking a few balloon breaths in corpse pose or Savasana.
This brain break is a mini lesson on several of the most popular winter holidays, why and how they are celebrated, and how they are all similar. Help your students understand and respect the different celebrations happening in Nov-Dec and what they have in common: 'These are a few but not all the winter holidays. One thing all of these celebrations have in common is unity and togetherness. While in easy pose, hold hands with your neighbor. Make eye contact. Tell them "Thank you" for being here.'
Yoga, when used as a brain break, helps with improving classroom management, classroom community and behaviors. They give students the ability to physically move around, expend some energy, notice their feelings in the moment without labeling them as good or bad, practice mindfulness, as well as calm and activate the brain to increase focus for the remainder of the school day.
