A Valentine Dewey Hunt BUNDLE Featuring the “Valentine Zombies” and “Love Bugs”!

This scavenger hunt will definitely appeal to your older students, especially the boys! This activity will reinforce student knowledge of the nonfiction section of your library. You can use it as a review game after you have completed your instruction.

There are 105 Valentine hearts, each with a different Dewey number. They are the same numbers as my nonfiction Dewey shelf signs which you can purchase here:

Directions for the Valentine Zombie Dewey Hunt:

Print the Hearts. I would strongly suggest printing them on cardstock and laminating them so you can reuse them year after year. Cut the hearts apart on the black squiggly lines. The part of the heart that has just the Dewey number on it will be the ones that are placed on the shelves. My suggestion would be to stick them either in between some books that have the matching Dewey number or place the heart halves on top of the books with the matching Dewey number. Make sure they are sticking out enough for the children to find. I included blank hearts if you want to add some additional ones.

The other halves of the hearts (the one with the Dewey number/subject) will be the ones that you will give to the students to go find the matching half. Students can do this by themselves or in groups, whichever you think would be best. Give the student(s) a broken heart and tell them that they must go to the nonfiction shelves to find the matching heart half. When they find their missing heart half, they bring it to you for checking. If it’s a match, they get another heart half to find.

You can award a small treat like a Hershey kiss, conversation heart, etc. for each heart they piece together (optional). Before or after the activity is over, you may tell them that if they have a heart half that has a “Valentine Zombie” on it they get a prize (an extra piece of candy, a book mark, an extra book to check out during library time, etc.) Collect the hearts and store in a plastic Ziploc bag until next year. I choose responsible students to make sure they are all collected and matched up before they go into the bag.
