A fun and motivating activity where students work together and speak English in order to solve a crossword puzzle.
A great puzzle to review the vocabulary about Valentine’s Day with ESL and regular students. It is suitable for a variety of grades. It comes with a secret message and students will be motivated to finish the puzzle in order to find it.
The crossword is focusing on some of the Valentine’s Day symbols and their descriptions: Valentine, February, love, heart, red, card, arrow, cupid, chocolate, dove and sweetheart.
The download includes the SAME crossword, but with 2 levels of difficulty (total of 10 sheets):
1-2. EASY - the crossword with CLUES & WORD BANK with exactly 10 words needed to complete the the crossword + the adapted answer key)
3-4. DIFFICULT - the crossword with CLUES but without any WORD BANK + the adapted answer key
5. Crossword puzzle – without any clues (if you want only 1 student to write for the team)
6. Crossword puzzle with WORD BANK - – without any clues (if you want only 1 student to write for the team)
7. CLUES – small format - 3 sets on one sheet (it saves paper )
8. CLUES – bigger format – 2 sets on one sheet
9. Description of the activity
10. Functional Language – to display on the board during the activity
Students use the clues (simple definitions) to guess the words about Valentine’s Day and write them in the puzzle. They can use the words from the WORD BANK. With more advanced students, you can use the same puzzle without the word bank to make it more challenging. When students find all the words, the secret message will be revealed.
The most efficient way of doing this activity as “round robin”:
Cut out the cards beforehand. Put 4 cards (A,B,C & D) in an envelope. Prepare 1 envelope for each team. Prepare 1 crossword per team if you want only 1 student to write the answers for the team or 4 crosswords if you want each teammate to practice spelling and writing in his own puzzle.
Use the letters A, B, C & D to name the students in each team (Student A, Student B…). Ask each student in the team to take out his card from the envelope, e.g. Student A gets Card A. Student B gets Card B. They cannot show their cards to each other.
The students will take turns to read their clues and try to guess the words in the puzzle.
Explain to the students that each of them must read his/her clue with the same number, e.g. If they want to discover word no. 1 in the crossword, each of them must read the clue no. 1 on his/her card.
In every team, Student A starts the activity by reading the clue no. 1 on his card aloud while his teammates listen attentively. (Tip: Ask every Student A to raise his/her hand before they begin to make sure they know who starts the game ...). Then, Student B follows with reading the clue no. 1 on his card, and then Student C and Student D do the same with their clues no.1 on their cards.
Important: Emphasize that all 4 clues must be read aloud before the teammates attempt to guess the word, so everyone has a chance to read and speak English.
Together, the students try to guess the word no.1 and write it in the crossword e.g. ROSE. Then, they take turns again to read the clue no. 2 on each card to find the word no. 2.
Have one of the teams demonstrate how to do it with the first word in the puzzle.
Ask to use English and write the functional language on the board:
What is it? I think it’s a cupid. Do you agree?
Yes, I agree. / Yes, I think you’re right. Write it down.
No, I don’t agree. I think it’s a rose because….
No, I don’t think so. Pass, we will check it later.
How do you spell “rose”? Let’s check it in the dictionary.
Can you repeat, please? What does it mean?
When everyone agrees, the teammates write the word in the puzzle. The students continue the activity until all the words are found and the secret message is revealed.
Students like this activity very much and make effort to speak English.
This puzzle can also be used as a simple crossword and it is a fun activity for homework as well as for fast finishers. No correction is necessary since the students know that they have got correct answers when the whole puzzle is finished.
The worksheet looks great in color, but it also prints perfectly in black and white.
Enjoy and have fun with your students! Happy Valentine’s Day!
