This lesson contains a complete guided reading worksheet with 42 questions (answer key included), 2 different crossword puzzles (with answer keys) and 2 different word searches (with answer keys) for A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
If you don't have this story in your literature book, you can find it here:
The 42 question worksheet are presented true/false, fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice and short response format, all in chronological order. As the student reads, the questions guide the student through the story.
Check out my feedback - these worksheets REALLY work! They keep the student focused and reading.
Key vocabulary words from the story are used in the puzzles. These puzzles enhance student comprehension of lesson related vocabulary. Here is how I use the word search. When students find the correct word, I have them write the definition next to the word at the bottom of the list. Works great!
Great value for $1.50
The 42 question worksheet takes about 40-70 minutes to complete; the crosswords and word search puzzles take about 25-40 minutes each to complete (all depending on the student).
The question worksheet is designed with cost effective photocopying in mind that can be combined to a front/back copy using only 1 sheet of paper. No staples. You can also copy both puzzles front to back as well, saving on paper.

As a public high school English teacher, the biggest challenge I have is getting students to read in class or at home. Put a book or short story in front of them, they'll look at it for a few seconds and start day dreaming...
Until I stumbled upon something magnificent. Teenagers like accomplishment. These worksheets ask questions while the reader reads. Every couple of sentences, there's another question in true or false, fill in the blank, define, multiple choice formats. As the student reads, boom, another question. They answer it and continue reading. Before you know it, they have finished reading the story and completed all questions for further lessons/discussions.
These worksheets are great for daily lessons, test/quiz grades, extra credit, homework, group work (in pairs of two), substitute teacher lessons, emergency lesson plans, great for ESOL or however you can imagine.
