Writing good thesis statements can be a difficult skill for students to master. However, it's one that will use not only in language arts classes but also in other disciplines and certainly in college as well.
This visual guide to thesis statements provides a handy guide on what thesis statements do and how to write one. Many studies have shown the power of visuals as a way to encode information in long term memory and this visual guide as designed to do that. It can also be a handy reference for writer's notebooks, writer's workshop, or learning stations.
I have also included an 18" x 24" version of the visual guide that you can use as a poster for your classroom. Simply follow the included instructions for printing at home or take the file to a printing copy and have it printed there.
Also included are classroom-tested teaching strategies for getting kids to write thesis statements for different essays, including a persuasive essay, a compare and contrast essay, and a literary analysis essay. While they are mainly for students who struggle with this concept, the teaching strategies are customizable to a number of different topics.
