A visually-adapted recipe for homemade vanilla ice cream based on the short story from Reading A-Z "How to Make Ice Cream" by Steven Accardi. Includes ingredients page, procedure page, ingredient labels, and teacher/therapist directions.
Can be used with special education (autism, multiple disabilities, learning disabilities, speech-language disorders, etc.) or general education students of all ages. Depending on student ability levels, this lesson can take between between 15-30 minutes to read the story, and/or about 25-45 minutes to make the ice cream.
Targets the following speech-language skills:
- Following directions
- Verbal sequencing
- Recall and comprehension of information
- Vocabulary (identifying and labeling)
- Pragmatics (turn-taking, collaboration)
- Critical thinking and problem solving
Adjust the activity to suit each child's needs and/or IEP goals or complete with the entire class. Lots of fun!!
