I've included a resource that I've used with my grade 7 and 8 classes which helps to develop critical thinking skills.
We read A Walk to Remember in class and also used the audio version from time to time. I asked the students to write personal responses in a journal. When I was pleased that the journal writing was done well, we used the attached exercise to develop some critical thinking. The journal writing was more of a summary of the text, but they weren't really telling me what they thought of the content or how it related to them on a personal level.
I extracted several important passages from the book and listed them. The students could write about any 5 passages. I have included a rubric, marking chart, and some sentence starters.
I have left the handout in Microsoft Word format so that you may easily change the content to use with your own class.
