This webquest is a mini-lesson on setting and how it affects the characterization of Rainbow Rowell's 2013 novel "Eleanor and Park." This class activity encourages readers to better understand the popular culture of the 70s and 80s and to understand how the works of film/TV, comic books/literature/magazines, and music affect the characters in this novel set in 1986. Of particular focus in the webquest are all of the artists and bands that Eleanor and Park fall in love over and use to express who they are and how they feel. Hyperlinks within the webquest access these works or articles on these works so students can listen or read more on YouTube, Wikipedia, etc. On the bottom of the second page, students write and assert how these works enhance the setting and deepen the characterization of the novel. If a teacher wanted, s/he could assign all of the works to an entire class and the students can share their findings in small groups or as a class. This lesson is a fun way for students to research, better understand characterization and setting, and connect to works that helped enrich "Eleanor and Park."
