Have some students that struggle with correctly subtracting numbers where they need to regroup? In my many years of teaching 5th grade math, I have found that there are at least a few students every year that struggle with regrouping.
I was introduced to this strategy recently and after watching the students quickly grasp how to subtract using this method, I wanted to pass it on to other math teachers who might not be familiar with it. It is a great strategy to use with students that need remediation and additional subtraction support as they move into higher level math skills.
I have included a thorough explanation of the strategy as well as number lines and problems that include step by step written instructions on solving each problem. Five scaffolded multi-digit problems are then presented along with an answer key.
