This book provides sign language instructors for hearing and deaf learners in the classroom and in the community setting a modeled format for Signed English.
The 25 lessons in A Word in the Hand are written for a standard procedure. Lessons have a skill game, a review, new vocabulary, practice, and an assignment. Each lesson allows the instructor to choose the presentation that not only conforms best to student capabilities but to the time available for teaching. With this approach, each lesson can be used for a single presentation or spread over several sessions.
A formal vocabulary of nearly 800 words is presented in twenty-five lessons. With the addition of tenses and various ending (e.g., –ed, –ing, –ly, and –s), the size of the vocabulary is significantly more.
