Reader's Theatre • A Wrinkle in Time by M. L'Engle • Common Comma Rules

Fluency, group work, literature analysis and Socratic discussion, and building good character are the goals with this fun and slightly creepy Reader's Theatre script!

Designed with 5th - 8th graders in mind, this script is based upon Chapters 1-4. This RT script also reinforces the character quality that it is the inside of a person that matters more than the outside and treating others the same despite the differences on the outside. This Reader's Theatre gives practice to the use of commas, while keeping L'Engle's popular science fiction novel memorable!

Practicing and performing a Reader's Theatre can be a very unforgettable activity that builds connections between the students and increases reading fluency as well!

A Wrinkle in Time begins with Mr. Murray's disappearance while he was experimenting with the 5th dimension, or time travel. With the help of the 3 strange visitors living in the abandoned house in the woods near the Murray family, Meg and Charles Wallace Murray and their friend Calvin, travel through time to other planets to attempt to rescue Mr. Murray. Not only do Calvin and the Murrays have to outwit evil during their time travel, but the kids learn many things about themselves through the eccentric visitors that guard and help them. This science-fiction story realistically explores time travel while the rescue of the Murray’s missing father is a clear battle of good versus evil.

To complete this project, students will NOT

• have to memorize anything!

• need costumes (it's more fun if you do, however)!

• need props (it's more fun if you do, however)!

• need to perform the script (it's more fun if you do, however)

This Reader's Theatre can either be performed for your own class, another class, or for your hard-working school staff.
