Back to School ELA Interactive Notebook
Since this is the beginning of the school year, many of the activities are review activities and may address 1st or 2nd grade Common Core Standards.

Sixteen different activities are included, with sample photographs for students to see the final product. A few of the activities include differentiation of the same task.

This pack is the first in a series. I will be creating an interactive notebook pack for each month (Aug- May) for 2nd grade. Make sure to follow my store to receive updates when new products, including this series, are added.

The following activities and concepts are covered in this pack:
• Short and Long Vowel Sort
• Sorting Out Summer Fun: Alphabetizing to the first and second letter (2 activities)
• Buggy for Syllables: Sorting words by number of syllables (one, two, and three syllable words)
• Swimming in Correct Sentences: Sorting complete and incomplete sentences
• Correcting Cool Sentences: Correcting simple sentences (editing for capitals, end marks, and fixing sentences to read correctly). Two versions are included. The first has one error per flap, the second version may include more than one error per flap.
• Quest for Questioning: Asking and answering questions about a literary passage (two levels of the reading passage are included. Students can either create and answer their own questions, or answer given questions).
• Quest for Questioning: Asking and answering questions about an informational passage (one reading passage is included. Students can either create and answer their own questions, or answer given questions).
• Catching Nouns and Verbs: Identifying nouns and verbs and sorting them
• Bubbly Nouns and Adjectives: Identifying nouns and adjectives and sorting them
• Parts of Speech Park: Identifying a noun or verb and using the word in a sentence
• How to Make a PB & J Sandwich: Sequencing (with pictures)

Johnny Appleseed Cross Curricular Interactive Notebook
Cross-Curricular Johnny Appleseed Activities for the Interactive Notebook

I created this pack to supplement your Math, ELA, and Science curriculum for Johnny Appleseed’s birthday on September 26th. Eleven different activities are included with sample photographs for students to see the final product. Several of the activities are differentiated for difficulty.

The following concepts are covered in this pack:

ELA

Johnny Appleseed Mini Book with Questions-Please note that this book has a higher readability due to some of the vocabulary (such as Indiana, Native Americans, and Pennsylvania) and may need to be read in partners or whole group for some students.

Author's Purpose- Write about the author’s purpose for the Johnny Appleseed printable mini book
Main Idea- write about the main idea for the Johnny Appleseed printable mini book
How to Make Applesauce- cut and paste flip book with pictures of how to make applesauce in the crockpot. Crockpot applesauce recipe is included. Extend the activity by having students transfer the writing from the flip book to paragraph format!
Apple Adjectives- use the projectable page to brainstorm (whole class) a list of adjectives to describe apples after a taste test. Then, students copy the adjectives and create sentences using 5 different adjectives on the flip flap book.

Science

Seasonal Changes- Drawing an apple tree throughout the seasons to show how it changes and writing about it.
Life Cycle of an Apple Tree- Ordering the life cycle of an apple tree and writing about it.


Math

Graphing- reading and answering questions about a given bar graph and creating a bar graph and questions and then answering. Please note that students will be creating a bar graph about taste testing red, yellow, and green apples so this activity will require the teacher to prepare an apple taste testing activity.
Telling Time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour
Addition Word Problems- addition within 10, addition within 20, addition without regrouping (within 100), addition with regrouping (within 100), and addition with and without regrouping (within 100)

Autumn ELA Interactive Notebook
Fall ELA Interactive Notebook for Second Grade

I created this pack to supplement your ELA curriculum for the Fall. Twenty-three different activities are included, with sample photographs for students to see the final product. Some of the activities are open ended and can be used with any text. Please note, there are no answer keys for these activities.

The following activities and concepts are covered in this pack:
* Literary and Informational Passage- Students read the passages and create and answer questions about the text.
* Retelling- Two different open ended activities for retelling. One focuses on plot elements (character, setting, problem, event, solution) and the other focuses on beginning, middle, end.
* Cause and Effect- Students read a short passage and identify then cut and paste cause and effect relationships.
* Text Feature Hunt- Students identify text features, record the page number, and record what they learned using the feature. This is an open ended activity that can be used with any informational text.
* Main Idea- Students identify the main idea and three supporting details. This is an open ended activity and can be used with any text.
* Narrative Story Writing- Writing planner with character, setting, beginning, middle and end for narrative writing.
* Sequencing and How to Writing- Students sequence pictures of how to grow a pumpkin and then write about the pictures.
* Short and Long Vowels- Students sort short and long vowel words.
* Vowel Teams-Two different activities. In the first activity students sort words into ai, ee, ea, and oa vowel teams. In the second activity students read words with vowel teams and match it to the corresponding picture.
* Two Syllable, Long Vowel Words- Students look at the picture and then match the picture to the two syllable, long vowel word.
* Syllables- Students sort words into 1, 2, and 3 syllables.
* Singular and Plural Nouns- Students sort words into singular and plural nouns.
* Plural Nouns- Students add endings to plural nouns and sort by rule.
* Irregular Plural Nouns- Students read sentences and fill in the irregular plural noun when given the singular noun.
* Collective Nouns- Students match the collective noun to the picture.
* Pronouns and Nouns- Students sort words into pronouns and nouns.
* Pronouns and Reflexive Pronouns- Students sort words into pronouns and reflexive pronouns.
* Nouns and Verbs- Students sort words into nouns and verbs.
* Verb Tense- Students sort words into past, present, and future verb tenses.
* Past Tense Verbs- Students read sentences and fill in the past tense verb when given the present tense.


Winter ELA Interactive Notebook
I created this pack to supplement your ELA curriculum for the winter. Twenty-eight different activities are included, with sample photographs for students to see the final product. Some of the activities are open ended and can be used with any text. Please note, there are no answer keys for these activities.

The following activities and concepts are covered in this pack:

*Literary and Informational Passage- Students read the passages and create and answer questions about the text.

*Retelling- Two different open ended activities for retelling. One focuses on plot elements (character, setting, problem, event, solution) and the other focuses on beginning, middle, and end.

*Main Idea- Students identify the main idea and three supporting details. This is an open ended activity and can be used with any text. Another main idea activity is included. Students read four short passages and determine the main idea of each. Two versions of the passage are included. One has picture prompts to assist in decoding and the other does not. Two versions are included, a lower and higher reading level.

*Context Clues- Several activities for context clues are included. In the first activity, students read four short passages and determine the meaning of an underlined word using context clues. The second activity has four vocabulary words from the book Brave Irene by William Steig. Students write the meaning of the words using context clues as the teacher reads the text aloud. The last activity is a blank format in which the teacher can write any four vocabulary words from any text for students to determine the meaning of using context clues.

*Character Responses to Major Events- Two activities are included. In the first students read a passage and complete questions about the character’s responses. Two versions are included, a lower and higher reading level. The second activity is an open-ended graphic organizer that can be used for any book.

*Comparing and Contrasting- Two activities for comparing and contrasting are included. The first is a simple Venn Diagram. The second is a Venn Diagram with a text frame that compares the texts for students to complete. Both activities are open ended and can be used with any book.

*Irregularly Spelled Words- Students read a fluency passage with several irregularly spelled words and then draw a picture to illustrate the story.

*Prefixes and Suffixes- Three activities are included. In the first activity students read words with prefixes and match them to the corresponding picture. In the second activity, students read words with suffixes and match them to the corresponding picture. In the third activity, students read a word with a prefix or suffix and create a sentence using the word.

*Noun- An opened ended noun graphic organizer is included.

*Capitalization- Three different activities are included to practice capitalization. Students sort common and proper places, events, and things. Then, students rewrite the noun correctly because the capitalization is “jumbled.”

*Plural Nouns- Two activities are included. In the first activity, students write the plural of several given nouns and then illustrate and write a sentence using five of the nouns. In the second activity, students write the plurals of irregular plural nouns when given picture prompts.

*Identifying Nouns and Verbs- Students identify a given word as a noun or verb and then use it in a sentence.

*Irregular Past Tense Verbs- Two activities are included. In the first activity, students read sentences and fill in the irregular past tense verb when given the present tense verb. In the second activity, students write the past tense verb of several given present tense verbs and then illustrate and write a sentence using five of the past tense verbs.

*Verb Tense- Students sort words into past, present, and future verb tenses.

*Possessive Nouns- Students write and sort possessive nouns.

*Contractions- Students write the contraction when given the two words that make up the contraction.

*Snowflake Bentley Research- Students read the book by Jacqueline Briggs Martin and research about his life in the flip flap book. Then, students write a biography “mini book.”
Snowflake Research- Students research about snowflakes in the foldable. Then, students write an informational paragraph using the paragraph frame foldable. Finally, students can publish the paragraph on the final draft paper.

*Narrative Story Writing- Writing planner with character, setting, beginning, middle and end for narrative writing.


Spring ELA Interactive Notebook

I created this pack to supplement your ELA curriculum for the Spring. Twenty-three different activities are included, with sample photographs for students to see the final product. Some of the activities are open ended and can be used with any text. Please note, there are no answer keys for these activities. A few of the activities are also differentiated for difficulty.

The following activities and concepts are covered in this pack:

• Literary and Informational Passages- Students read the passages, create questions, and then answer the questions about the text. Three levels of each text (beginning, middle and late 2nd grade) are included to allow for differentiation for your readers.

• Retelling- Two different open ended activities for retelling. One focuses on plot elements (character, setting, problem, event, solution) and the other focuses on beginning, middle, and end.

• Main Idea- Students identify the main idea and three supporting details. This is an open ended activity and can be used with any text. Another main idea activity is included. Students read four short passages and determine the main idea of each. Two versions of the passage are included. One has picture prompts to assist in decoding and the other does not.

Students complete the second activity after reading the book A Bad Case of the Stripes by David Shannon and describe the main character’s responses.

There are two levels of difficulty included. The second activity has four vocabulary words from the book A Bad Case of the Stripes by David Shannon. Students write the meaning of the words using context clues as the teacher reads the text aloud. The last activity is a blank format in which the teacher can write any four vocabulary words from any text for students to determine the meaning of using context clues.

• Cause and Effect- Students read a short passage and identify the cause and effect relationships.

• Point of View- After reading the book I Wanna Iguana by Karen Kaufman Orloff, students write the mother’s point of view and the little boy’s point of view is in the text.

• Multi-Syllabic Words- Students read a fluency passage with several multi-syllabic words and then draw a picture to illustrate the story.

• Subject and Predicate- Students read and sort subjects and predicates.

• Complete and Incomplete Sentences- Students read and sort complete and incomplete sentences.

• Combining Sentences- Students read two sentences and combine them.

• Contractions- Students write the contraction when given the two words that make up the contraction.

• Identifying Adjectives and Adverbs- Students identify a given word as an adjective or adverb and then use it in a sentence.

• Antonyms- Students read sentences and complete with the antonym.

• Narrative Story Writing- Writing planner with character, setting, beginning, middle and end for narrative writing. A final draft paper is also included.

• Opinion Writing- Two activities are included. In the first activity, students practice writing reasons and backing them with an explanation. In the second activity, students write a paragraph about a pet. The perfect text to match this activity is the book Can I Keep Him? By Steven Kellogg.

• Sequencing and Expository Writing- Students sequence the life cycle of a frog using pictures and research the life cycle. Then, students write a paragraph. Final draft paper is included.




End of the Year ELA Interactive Notebook
I created this pack to supplement your ELA curriculum for the end of the school year. Twenty-one different activities are included, with sample photographs for students to see the final product. Some of the activities are open ended and can be used with any text. Please note, there are no answer keys for these activities.

The following activities and concepts are covered in this pack:

• Literary and Informational Passage- Students read the passages and create and answer questions about the text.

In the second activity, students read sentences with contractions or possessive nouns and sort the sentences.
• Commas- Students read sentences and sort to find if the commas in the sentences are used correctly or incorrectly.
• Multiple Meaning Words- Students match pictures of multiple meaning words and then use each word in a sentence.
• Narrative Writing Organize- Students use the organizer to write a narrative story.
• End of the Year Memory Book- Students complete a four page memory book recording memories, favorites, writing about their best friend, and their measurements.
