Math journals are a great way to check for student understanding. They are also a great homework idea, and/or assessment. This year I am sending home a math journal with a math problem or task each week as my students’ homework.
I also use my math journals in class and give occasional warm up questions or end of lesson questions for my students to answer.
This packet includes 80 math journal tasks/questions based on the Common Core math standards for First grade. This is enough for about 2 journal tasks per week for the entire school year. I have made them so that you will print one page containing a set of each task/problem.
There are ten per page, so you will need to make very few copies. You will have your students glue them into their journals. They will show their work on their journal page.
You can use cheap notebooks for student journals.
I am also including a page that shows my “expectations” for the math journal work. I have my students glue this into the very front of their math journals as a reference.
Some tasks may be more appropriate for school, and others homework.
I hope you enjoy this resource! Happy journaling!
