This unit contains thematic ten frames that you can use with your students all year. With the Common Core State Standards, students will be expected to add and subtract numbers within 20 (first grade), and decompose and add and subtract numbers to 10 (kindergarten.) This set is perfect for teaching those math skills and concepts.
For each theme, there are two types of frames. The first is simply two ten frames on one page. The page can be copied and then cut in half, giving you two identical ten frames (each on a half-sheet of paper.) The other type is a whole-page with two ten frames. This is for use with numbers larger than ten, and you will need one page for each student or group. I’ve inserted a dotted line on the pages that need to be cut.
The set contains both of the versions for the following themes: the adorable rockin’ and Converse-wearing cat, School, Autumn/leaves, Farm, Halloween, Brown Bear, Squirrels, Gingerbread, Snowmen, Valentine’s Day, Read Across America Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Earth Day, Rain, Spring, Beach, Patriotic, Birthday/Happy New Year, and Rainbow Birds. In addition, there are four more sets: three on colorful but not thematic paper, and one plain white one (Students love to decorate their own!)
These ten frames can be used with any manipulative you choose! Unifix cubes, pattern blocks, two-sided disks, bear counters, links, coins, and buttons all work well. You may find thematic foam or wood pieces at craft or discount stores. Small glass marbles that are used to fill vases work really well as “raindrops” with the Rain set. My students enjoyed colorful paper clips with the school set, real acorns (with and without caps) for the Squirrel set, pompoms with the colorful Cat set, candy with the Gingerbread set (one small package of smarties or fun size M&Ms), and even small pieces of paper (I used craft punches to get fun shapes) with all the sets!
