This writing activity and rubric is a fantastic September writing task that lets the teacher get to know their students as people and as writers. Students choose one noun that has meaning to them for every letter of the alphabet and write a paragraph about why they chose that noun and its meaning.
This is easy to differentiate for students by customizing word length requirement and required number of paragraphs. To scaffold for students, I have included instructions for brainstorming ideas and sample brainstorming.
It's always fun to return these to students at the end of the year so they can read about their September selves.
