MY ALL TIME FAVORITE CONVERSATION LESSON!
This lesson is based on a great scout activity, which my mythical scout leader gave us after a long hike (and as a special thank you, I’ve named some of the more shady passengers after him and some of my other scout instructors LOL).
This task is supposed to strengthen and test moral convictions and test basic prejudices, but from an ESL teacher’s point of view, it’s great at forcing students to express an opinion.
THIS PRESENTATION CONTAINS A 56 SLIDE POWERPOINT LESSON IN EDITABLE PPT FORMAT WITH WORK PAPERS THAT ACCOMPANY THE LESSON.
This lesson includes:
- An speaking group activity which forces student to take sides, create groups and alliances, share opinions and argue fiercely
- This lesson takes at least 90 min, but I’ve also used it in a 60 min lesson, by reducing the passenger numbers.
I do this activity with a few classes in the same period and at the end of this lesson, I hang the final lists of all the groups in a visible place. You’ll be surprised how much conversation and debate this activity continues to manufacture long after you’re done!
(I usually do this activity after my ‘agree to disagree’ lesson. The students already have practiced, and , are familiar with, the rules of argument. I also ask the students to use the same handouts from this lesson- they are included in this lesson, if you don’t already have them)
This is a really good lesson for some group bonding.
I hope you enjoy this lesson
