Based on the alphabet-guessing book "Q is for Duck", you will be using "patterned" or "structured" writing. This can be very effective with struggling writers, and it also allows advanced students to extend their writing capabilities.
Not your typical alphabet book! Students use the pattern of Q Is for Duck to create their own Greek mythology alphabet book in which students make clever associations for each letter of the alphabet.
This writing activity includes
- Brainstorm Template - Help students list word associations and traits to inspire writings
- Writing Activity Planner (4 pages) -Students can organize ideas, use Greek myths to summarize and formulate information into creative writing sentences with details from myths
- Creative Writing Booklet (28 pages) - When printed and folded, each Letter page has the corresponding Because page on the reverse side to “hide” answer and give reader a chance to guess the accompanying answer and see illustrations. Students can choose which page to use as their book title.
Encourage students to add illustrations on both pages if using booklet template. Brainstorm to emphasize the associated qualities and details about the Gods/Goddesses and myths to elaborate on the “because” section of the book.
Vary how you want to use this booklet:
**Multiple Myth Studies - culminating writing activity that uses goddesses, heroes, creatures, and other story elements, create writing project from selected Greek myths
**Vocabulary Focus - Using current words with Greek origins, explain meanings and story background
**Individual Myth Study - Focus on a specific myth to analyze character traits, symbols, actions, and elements of the myth
