There are lots of I AM style poems that focus on students personifying protest of other time periods such as the Revolutionary war, the Reform movements of the 1800s. But I felt that I needed to challenge my students to think about modern reforms, reforms of 2018, that need to be brought to light.
This project goes well during any time period where you are learning about protesting and people fighting injustice.
After learning about the historical issues, we brainstorm different injustices, movements, laws, beliefs that need to be changed TODAY. Students then choose a movement to research and "bring to life." This activity allows students to put a face to a statistic and really allows for them to personify their movement in a powerful way.
Included is the research section, the poem format, and 4 example poems.
