This 21-page document is inspired by (I say this because it's not exact to the samples that were given by the state...but then again, who knows) Part 2 of the NY State Common Core English Regents staring in 2014. The document includes a scientific research report on the effects of music on the brain. The directions give students strategies for reading for details that support the research's controlling idea. The second article is a report done by Stanford on-line news about the research report the students just worked with. After using their reading strategies to extract details, the students can practice multiple choice questions that are inspired by the skills Part 2 requires (There aren't any multiple choice questions on this Part 2 of the state exam. They are included with this product to help with discussion and allow for assessment of progress), and write a paragraph that uses the same directions as the essay for Part 2. It's good practice to insert before a full-length research project, or just anywhere in the curriculum as a stand-alone unit. Thanks for your continued interest in my products!
